History of Cirencester Housing Society
The Society was formed in 1949, largely at the instigation of the then Cirencester Urban District Council. At the time the Council saw the creation of such a society as a means of overcoming some of the restrictions placed on them, in the development of land for much needed houses to rent after World War II.
The Society’s first development –in the early 1950’s– was in conjunction with the Cirencester Benefit Society in the Shepherds Way area, 42 houses and 24 flats. This has been extended over the years with Flats in Lavender Lane and Jefferies Court in 1987 a further 34 properties in Vyners Close were added when the Society merged with the Corinium Housing Society. A further 12 properties were build in 1989. Since then the Society has increased its stock by purchasing properties from the open market and obtaining Social Housing Grant funding.
Today the Society is the other main provider of housing alongside Fosseway in Cirencester. The Society works with other registered Social landlords in the Cotswold District area providing a quality service for its residents.
Cirencester Housing Society is registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965. It is a non-profit making organisation and can receive money for development from Central Government. A Board of voluntary members who bring a variety of skills and experience determine policies and setting objectives with the Chief Executive and staff carrying the day-to-day running of the Society.
